LEARNING POWER

We use the national curriculum to teach core skills and knowledge. We also use Webb's DOK (Depth of Knowledge) levels to challenge all children and deepen their understanding. Being able to recall facts would come under Level 1, whereas being able to compare or predict would come under Level 2. There are 4 levels in total and by using this approach, we make sure that activities planned for lessons not only teach them what they need to know but extends their level of understanding.

We know that teaching the children how to be good learners is essential for their future success in education and beyond. We use a programme called 'Building Learning Power', which focuses on four main areas. One is 'Resilience', which teaches the children how to not give up when something is difficult and to realise that when you are stuck the real learning can begin. We focus on one of these areas each half term and the children are rewarded when they show these skills.

At SMC we believe that children need to learn the knowledge and skills that will enable them to be anything they want to be. We put a big emphasis on children being able to apply the skills they have learnt and we use technology, such as i-pads or our 3-D projector to support the whole curriculum. All that we do has a foundation of love, whether that be a love of learning or how we treat each other. We use Gospel values to guide us on how we can apply our faith to our everyday lives.

DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE

ENRICHMENT

It is very important that children find learning fun and exciting and that the curriculum is delivered in a varied way. Children learn in different ways therefore having themed practical days, can be a very effective way of learning about a topic. Daily lessons are checked for enrichment activities but we also have an annual programme of enrichment days, where at the end of each half term all the children will focus on a religious theme, a school initiative theme and a curriculum theme.

We believe that life experiences are not only a great way of having fond memories of school, but essential in the development of social and relationship skills. We have curriculum based day trips and also outward bound trips designed to teach communication and team building skills. This culminates in a Year 6 five day residential trip to Hindleap Warren Outdoor Education Centre. We also have a variety of sporting and academic clubs before and after school.
